Beichuan County came to the world's attention after the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. After the disaster, Beichuan people refused to grieve and instead turned their desperate sadness into force for changing their lives. Yang Xiaohua is one such survivor who's turned her life around.

Yang said, “I used to be a housemaid before the earthquake. I have been learning embroidery for more than a year. This has given me a better income and a more interesting life.”

Optimism runs in the blood of Beichuan people, most of whom are ethnic Qiang. They refused to stay depressed. The quake gave them an opportunity to start afresh.

Zhang Lizai, manager of Qiang Embroidery Shop, said, “The quake made us realize the beauty of our unique Qiang ethnic embroidery and to preserve it. So we rounded up jobless girls after the earthquake to learn the art.”

The work is hard. But living in this newly established town is now easier for the residents. Schools, hospitals, grocery stores and restaurants, most of their daily needs can be satisfied here.

Wang Zhiqiang, Beichuan County worker, said, “Of course the earthquake is a disaster nobody wanted to see. But on the other hand, as I heard from many local Beichuan people, this resettlement project has greatly improved their lives.”

For the local people who survived, to be with their loved ones to cherish every moment means a lot. All the misery and difficulties have now passed.

Restaurant worker Xu Lirong said, “I am very satisfied with life now. I have a good job, and live in a new spacious house. I cannot think of any other thing I need right now.”
