Floodwaters from the Mississippi River and its tributaries have spilled across farm fields in the Mississippi Delta.

Hundreds have fled their homes in the Delta over the past several days as the water rose toward some of the highest levels on record. If the crest pushes all the way through the Delta by late next week, as predicted, it could shatter the record set during the Great Flood in 1927.

The local government urged everyone in the flood's path to flee, but said there's no reason to believe a levee on the Yazoo River would fail. People used boats to navigate flooded streets.

Army Corps is helping to protect residential areas by filling rectangular baskets with sand and dirt. Barge traffic has dropped and refineries along the river could be affected.
