It used to takes 40 minutes for Xiao Caigun to go to the nearby town.

The dried-up lake means it now takes only 10 minutes.

The 54-year-old farmer is distressed. He should be working hard in his fields, but they're now filled with withered grass.

Xiao Caigun, villager in Jiangxi Province, said, "My fields have been sowed, but it cannot live without water. There's just grass all over my farm."

The situation is not any better in the city.

Shanghai's precipitation is 70 percent less than usual, the worst drought in 138 years.

The water level of its landmark Huangpu River is dropping. At ebb tide, lots of silt can be seen.

A Shanghai resident said, "I am really worried if it's still not going to rain. Boats on the river and the city's water supply might be affected."

People are eagerly waiting for the forecasted rain. But experts say since the amount of precipitation is unclear, it's not known to what extent it can help ease the drought.
