Li Na's rival: Francesca Schiavone

06-04-2011 14:50 BJT

On Saturday, Chinese "Golden Flower" Li Na will embrace the second Grand Slam final of her career at Roland Garros. Her opponent is the defending French Open champion Francesca Schiavone who beat Li in last year's round of 16. Let's take a look at her profile.

Francesca Schiavone, nationality: Italian, born on June 23rd, 1980, height: 166cm, weight: 64kg, right-hander, professional career beginning in 1998 with 4 singles titles: the 2007 Austrian Open, 2009 Moscow Kremlin Cup, the 2010 Barcelona Open and last year's historic win at the French Open.

Schiavone's most glorious moment so far has been claiming champion in the French Open. 2010 was her first time in a French Open final, and she became the first Italian female to win a Grand Slam championship, pivoting her into the world's top ten. In her journey, she's had consecutive wins over Killilenko, Warzniaki and Damendiva.

Schiavone's technique is unusual these days in that she has a single hand backhand in a style that resembles another champion, Justine Henin. Her forehand is very strong and she's not afraid of coming into the net. She also has a decent serve making her an all round skillful clay court player.

Schiavone and Li Na have met four times previously, in the 2007 Sydney Open, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2009 US Open and the 2010 French Open. Head to head they stand at two all.

Judging on recent results conditions, Li Na may have a slight edge but clay is not her favoured surface where as Schiavone revels in it. The players have only met once on clay in last year's French Open, where Schiavone won in straight sets in the round of 16, and went on to eventually claim the title.
