UN Council calls on Khartoum to withdraw troops from Abyei

06-04-2011 15:42 BJT

The UN Security Council has called on the Khartoum government to withdraw its forces immediately from Abyei. The oil-producing region is a key area of dispute in the north-south division of Sudan next month.

There has been no agreement on which country it should belong to when south Sudan becomes independent on July 9th. But the northern military seized it on May 21st, sparking fears of a renewed civil war.

Nelson Messone, UN Security Council President, said, "The Security Council expresses grave concern following the reports about the unusual, sudden influx of thousands of Misseriya into Abyei town and its environs that could force significant changes in the ethnic composition of the area. The council condemns all unilateral actions meant to create facts on the ground that would prejudice the outcome of the negotiations."
