The Tour of Qinghai Lake, officially gets underway tomorrow...but there was some hard racing going on today, during the test race ahead of stage 1.

The day, designed to give the cyclists an opportunity to get acclimatized to racing in the high altitude at Qinghai, before the 10th edition of the Tour gets rolling.

148 riders gathered in the center square of Huzhu in Qinghai province for the test ride.

The riders did nine circuits around the town, a fairly easy flat ride covering a distance of just over 51 km.

For the first seven laps, the riders seemed to take it easy...but that changed in the eighth lap as a group of Chinese riders managed to break away. Their lead though, would not last.

And even though it was a training run, there was a little excitement down the final stretch...as with less than 500 metres to go, three riders got tangled up, resulting in their race being ended.

One of the pre-race favourites, Boris Shpilevsky of the Tabriz Petrochemical team, lived up to his billing, finishing the day in first place.

Wong Kam Po, Team Hong Kong, said, "All the riders want to ride fast today, because this is the first race of this tour. There were some groups, but no breakaways today. I think maybe it's an easy route and we are all on the same level."
