Rescuers are racing against time to reach the 21 trapped miners in the flooded Niupeng Mine, in Pingtang County in Southwest China's Guizhou Province. The location of the trapped miners has now been verified.

The flooding occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, when 29 miners were working in two shafts of the mine.

Eight workers have so far been safely brought back to the surface.

But the other 21, who are all from Guangxi Zhuang Auntonomous Region, are still trapped in the ventilating shaft.

Dong Xiaojun, Dep. Director of Pingtang Admin. of Work Safety, said, "The ventilating shaft runs through the main shaft. This is the sump, the water storage. It used to be filled with water. But this time the wall of the sump has been destroyed, causing the flooding. The water ran through the ventilation tunnel, sending people down the pit."

Rescuers are racing against time to save 40 workers trapped underground in two
coal mine disasters in southwest China.

After the accident, more than a thousand police, firemen, and para-military have been mobilized. Their main task is to drain the water from the shaft.

Crews are operating pumps, but so far they've been unable to reduce the water level.

Dong Xiaojun, Dep. Director of Pingtang Admin. of Work Safety, said, "The shaft traverses underneath a river. So the water is seeping through the fault into the sump. And the recent rain is adding to the problem."

To speed up the process, the number of pump used has been increased from 9 to 19. And 4 other high-power pumps are being installed.

Niupeng is a local private coal mine still under construction. Its annual production is about 150-thousand tonnes. It's not known whether there is emergency work station in the mine, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
