In Libya, rebel fighters have made significant gains on the frontline west of Misrata, after a week of deadlock just outside the town of Zlitan.

The rebels took heavy casualties but pushed forward beyond the farmland outside Zlitan into its outskirts. Video footage showed heavy fighting on the frontline, which has moved several kilometers west according to the rebels.

Wounded rebels say pro-Gaddafi forces moved forward with tanks overnight but were repelled. Rebels then decided to move forward in the morning, leaving themselves vulnerable to heavy fire and minefields.

The frontline west of Misrata has been static for more than a week.
