Hundreds of striking Greek taxi drivers demonstrated outside a government building in Athens on Tuesday.

The drivers have been on an indefinite strike for more than two weeks to protest against a new licensing law. The new legislation may increase the number of taxis in the streets and cut deep into taxi drivers' income. Protesters blocked a busy highway nearby the transport ministry.

A series of meetings with government officials have failed to produce any compromise. The reforms are a part of the country's austerity measures to pay out rescue loans.

Angel Gurria, OECD Secretary General, said, "Greece must continue cutting the deficit to halt and then reverse the rise in public debt. To achieve this, strengthening tax collection is very critical."

Evangelos Venizelos, Greek Finance Minister, said, "We are in the middle of an effort. There is a course in front of us. And there is a way out of the tunnel we are in. But we cannot and we must not slip backward."
