The massive mudslide that struck Zhouqu county last year, was triggered in an area called the San Yan Yu valley. Local authorities are building better quality dams and large concrete barriers, in order to prevent future mudslides.

A two-kilometer-long conduit separates the San Yan Yu valley area. It is eighteen meters wide and over seven meters high, the country's largest conduit. But the conduit is dwarfed compared to the area that was destroyed by the mudslide.

Zhang Hengtang, deputy director in San Yan Yu valley Landslide Control Project, said, "The conduit actually is only one third of our overall project to control the landslide in the San Yan Yu valley."

Heading higher, at the top of the conduit, two major sources of last year's mudslide come into view. A dam here was destroyed by the mudslide, but a new one is under construction and will be constructed with more durable material. Instead of using sand and stone, the new dam will be made of reinforced concrete and will be twice as high.

Experts say the new dam will not only hold back potential mudslides, it will also enhance the valley's slopes, reducing the risks of further collapses.

Zhang Hengtang said, "We build the dams in order according to the height, the highest first, then lower ones. Finally, we connect the lowest dams to the conduit at the gate of the valley."

Meanwhile, a special dam, made up of 11 concrete pillars in the front and twelve at the back will be constructed at the valley's highest point, acting as a sifter to block large materials like boulders. The intensity of future mudslides will be sharply reduced by the barriers, protecting the counties down below.
