Monday marks the one year anniversary of a massive mudslide that hit Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province. The disaster left more than 1,700 people dead or missing.

A commemoration ceremony was held Monday morning at the "Remembrance Garden" which was built in one of the hardest hit villages. Government and military officials and local residents attended the gathering to honor those who died in the tragedy.

Last year's disaster caused the Bailong river to become blocked, which then inundated one third of the county. It took soldiers three months to clear the debris. A series of measures have been taken to prevent future disasters.

Houses will not be built in dangerous areas that are in the potential path of mudslides. And many residents in Zhouqu county will be relocated to upper reaches of the river and to a new area in the provincial capital of Lanzhou three hundred kilometers away. Roads, power supplies and telecommunications have returned to normal. Psychologists have been continuing to treat survivors and those who lost their family members.
