With Asia's growing importance in the global economy, ASEAN as the only formally recognized association of nations in the region has become even more important. Our correspondent Andy Saputra met the organization's
Secretary General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, to see how it's responding to the current crisis. And with the US credit rating has been downgraded, how will this impact ASEAN economies?

Dr. Surin Pitsuwan said, "I think we have learned the lessons after the crisis in 2008, we have been advised to turn into the region, your own region, trying to cultivate your own domestic and regional markets, integrate yourselves and in our own language, we are on the supply lines into the factories of China and into the factories of India, so in that sense the dynamism of both emerging giant economy is certainly have some positive implications on ASEAN. So you ask if these situation, negative news coming out from the US out of Europe now, is it going to derail ASEAN, well it’s going to impact ASEAN but I think the trend is going to pick up very quickly, whether there is any investment, any flow of investment it will come to ASEAN, because we have proven to the world that we are a good place to invest in, and good return yes."
