Libyan rebels have claimed the capture of Garyan, a second strategic town near Tripoli. According to a rebel spokesman, Garyan is fully in the hands of the opposition, and Gaddafi has been cut off from the outside world.

Meanwhile, a US defense official said that Gadaffi's forces had fired a Scud missile for the first time since the unrest broke out six months ago. The official said it was fired on Sunday and landed in the desert east of Brega, injuring no one. After months of only incremental gains in their struggle against Gaddafi, rebel advances in the last two days have transformed the battle.

The capture of Zawiya cut Tripoli's main lifeline road west. Although rebels may still lack the manpower for an all-out assault on Tripoli, they are hoping their encirclement will bring down Gaddafi's government. In the past, rebels have frequently failed to hold gains, and a counter attack by Gaddafi troops could break the siege.
