In fencing, gold medal favorite Lei Sheng of China took on diminutive opponent Martino Minuto of Italy in the men's foil final.

Lei, who anchored China's team foil champion team in last year's World Championships, took a healthy lead throughout most of the match, however, the Italian produced a memorable comeback in late stages, upsetting the world no. 1 with a 15-13 victory. Lei had to settle for silver.
