This is Biden's third visit to China. His previous visits were in 1979 and 2001. Let's take a brief look now at the 68-year-old's political career.

A Democrat, he was first elected to the Senate in 1972 and became the sixth-youngest senator in US history. In 1979, he first visited China and met with Deng Xiaoping. He was elected to represent Delaware in the Senate six times, becoming one of the longest serving Senators in US history.

He also served as a chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a long-time member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and chaired it in 2001. Biden unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in both 1988 and 2008. Barack Obama selected Biden as the the Democratic Party nominee for Vice President in the 2008 presidential race.
