As of this year, the United States has the world's largest economy with China in second place. China is the world's most populous nation and the US has the third highest amount of people.

China and the US trade most between themselves, with bilateral trade volumes in 2010 reaching more than 385 billion US dollars. China is the US's largest debt holder. China continued to buy US treasury securities in the second quarter of 2011, totaling almost 1.2 trillion US dollars.

But monetary policy has been one of the biggest issues for Sino-US relations, as the US believes the yuan is undervalued, and has been pushing China to appreciate the currency. The RMB has now risen by around three percent compared to the end of last year.
