The White House has announced that US Vice President Joe Biden will visit Chengdu, the capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, in addition to holding talks with Chinese leaders. After his visit to China, Biden will also make stops in Mongolia and Japan.

US Vice President Joe Biden will visit Wenchuan, the 2008 quake-hit area in Sichuan province. US military planes flew to the region, sending a large amount of aid materials. Biden's visit is viewed as an opportunity to send a good-will message to China, while also getting a first-hand understanding of China's development.

Luo Yuan, Secretary General of China Assoc. for Military Science, said, "Sichuan is an important location in Southwest China, and an important one in China's defense strategy. His visit here, on one hand, is because he wants to see how the region has developed. And on the other hand, since there are a lot of military industry related enterprises, he wants an in-depth understanding of China's economy and defense development."

According to the White House, Biden will emphasize bilateral economic relations in his visit to Mongolia. And during his visit to Japan, Biden hopes to strengthen the bilateral partnership of the two nations. Experts say Biden's visit shows the US's wish to strengthen the country's influence in Asia. Stable US-China relations are key to its Asia strategy.

Rong Ying, researcher of China Inst. of Int’l Studies, said, "If the US wants to come back to the Asia-Pacific region, defending its strategic and economic interests, especially when the region's economy is flourishing and the US relies on the region to revive its own economy, then the US must maintain stable ties with China. So we hope the US can bear the overall situation in mind, when dealing with some specific issues of bilateral ties, especially some core issues of concern to China."

Biden's visit is the beginning of several high-level exchanges between the two countries for the year, and plays an important role on whether bilateral ties will be strengthened.
