Libyan rebels have advanced into the heart of Tripoli. In response, NATO has described Gaddafi's regime as "crumbling" and US President Barack Obama has called the situation a "tipping point". Gaddafi has made two audio addresses over state television calling on Libyans to resist the rebels. One of his sons has been taken into custody and another has surrendered.

Tripoli's Green Square erupted in celebration as rebel troops pushed into the center of the Libyan capital overnight. All of Tripoli is reportedly under rebel control except for Gaddafi's stronghold of Bab Al-Aziziyah. They met little resistance from Gaddafi troops as they moved from the western outskirts into Tripoli.

They have also taken over a military base belonging to the Khamis Brigade, driving out elite forces led by Gaddafi's son, Khamis.

The rebel National Transitional Council announced the capture of Gaddafi's son, Saif Al-Islam, while his eldest Mohammed has surrendered to the rebels, saying he wants peace. Presidential guards are also said to have surrendered and the rebels are now in control of the Libyan State Radio building.
