Every year, the autumn high tides along the Qiantang River in east China attract tourists from all over the world. Scientists say, this year's Qiantang River tides are the largest in nine years. Right now, the tidal waves are surging through Jiaxing-Shaoxing River-Crossing Bridge.

The Qiantang River tides appear each year during the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when incoming tides form a huge wave that travels against the direction of the current as the river narrows. A long tidal wave first appears at the wide mouth of the estuary during the late hours of morning, and slowly works its way up river over several hours. The largest waves this year are expected on Friday.

Normally, thousands of visitors crowd the banks of Haining or Xiaoshan to watch the waves, which can swell up to 9 meters high. Surfing on such giant river tides can be a unique experience. The three-day Qiantang River International Surfing Competition is set to open Wednesday and is a sporting event only for the brave. Surfing the Qiantang tides is an age-old tradition in Zhejiang Province. There are numerous legends and stories about courageous local surfers. These stories are part of the foundation for Chinese people's admiration for people who struggle against the odds and adversity to accomplish something big.
