The UN's nuclear watchdog has passed a resolution, expressing concern over Iran’s nuclear program. The IAEA resolution calls on Iran to clear up outstanding questions about its nuclear capabilities, but came short of referring the matter to the UN Security Council.

A call for dialogue or an ultimatum... ?

Following its explosive report on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the new resolution was adopted by 32 votes to 2 at a IAEA meeting in Vienna.

The US and its Western allies have siezed upon the IAEA’s findings, accusing Iran of deceiving the world by hiding a secret nuclear weapons program.

Glyn Davies, US Ambassador to the IAEA, said, "The IAEA’s information shows that Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear device, and that some of these activities may still be ongoing."

The IAEA’s resolution calls on Iran to clarify several key matters relating to its nuclear program, a move aimed at verifying once and for all whether there are military dimensions to its nuclear amibitions. The agency also said it was essential for Iran and the agency to engage in serious dialogue over the issue.

However, Iran rejected the IAEA’s call.... reiterating its stance that there was no smoking gun, and that the country was being treated unfairly by the UN’s nuclear watchdog.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA, said, "These allegations are all fabricated in order to have a pretext of putting pressure on Iran, but more than that, to change the IAEA to United Nations watchdog so that they can dictate from Washington, New York, what to do in Vienna. We will not permit Mr. Amano to in fact obey what US says. Mr. Amano is the Director General. He should do his job as he has taken oath."

While the controversy between the IAEA and Iran over its nuclear ambitions has been going on for years, the US, the EU and Israel also continue to question Iran’s intentions, Tehran has so far defied any attempt to halt its nuclear programme.
