Belgium prepares for annual ice sculpture festival

11-24-2011 14:15 BJT

A Disney ice fantasy has arrived in the coastal Belgian city of Bruges. International artists were putting the finishing touches Wednesday on a series of spectacular ice sculptures for the city's annual snow and ice festival.

This year, the festival celebrates the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris. Among the 90 sculptures on display are a host of Disney favourites. Aladdin, Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Mickey Mouse sit alongside lions and tigers from Disney classics The Lion King and The Jungle Book.

In order to stop the ice characters from melting, temperatures in the exhibition space are kept at minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Alexander Deman, organiser of snow and ice sculpture festival, said, "We have been working for five weeks with 29 international artists from 11 different nationalities. We transformed not less than 400 tonnes of ice, or 22 trucks full loads of ice, into 90 Disney characters."

It may look like a daunting task, but for one of the artists ice is the perfect medium.

Marc Lepire, artist from Canada, said, "Ice is alive because when it's very cold, it's still very hard but when it melts after, it's melting slowly and you can see that. It's very cool because next year I can come back here again and do again in the same place, another thing. Ice is perfect."

This year, the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary and is hoping to attract around 200-thousand visitors. It opens on Friday and will run until January 15th.
