Pro surfers are getting into action on Hawaii's famous North Shore this week. The Vans Triple Crown is underway, just in time for the holiday season. And as CCTV reporter Tracey Holmes tells us it’s not just the ocean making waves at this week’s World Cup competition.

Back in 1779 an English sailing fleet that came by these shores and for the first time provided documented history that the sport of surfing existed. There haven’t been too many changes in the sport since then, until today for the first time in history a woman is competing in the Vans Triple Crown.

Carissa Moore of Hawaii competes during round two of the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Ali'i
Beach in Haleiwa, Hawaii November 22, 2011.

Carissa Moore is the 2011 ASP Women’s World Champion granted a wild card entry into the season ending men’s events. As a local, many of the surfers are used to seeing her riding fast, dangerous and tricky waves like these but what they are not used to is having their ability measured against hers.

For the better part of the heat, Carissa was sitting in second place and looked certain of progressing to round three but in the dieing stages former world champion, Sunny Garcia pulled off the wave of the heat to move into first place, forcing Carissa into third and sudden elimination.

Sunny Garcia knows how to win events here - he’s a six time Vans Triple Crown Champion and while having Carissa in his heat was not going to put him off his game, it certainly helped hers.
