Iran has blocked a diplomatic website, just hours after it was launched by the US State Department. It was set up by the US as a "virtual embassy" for Iranians.

It went online on Tuesday in English and Farsi. The US says the website is not intended to replace an official diplomatic mission to Iran, but to promote what it calls "people-to-people contact". But Iranian lawmakers blocked it, deeming it as a plot against their country.

The White House has since condemned Tehran for the move, saying the Iranian government has once again demonstrated its commitment to the hard-line censorship and surveillance of its citizens. The US has not had diplomatic relations with Iran since its embassy in Tehran was stormed in 1979, when militants held dozens of Americans hostage.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the online embassy for Iran aims to
increase communication.
