English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United has been a fixture in the late stages of the Champions League over the last few years as they have reached the final in three of the last four seasons. Man U travelled to FC Basel for their final Group C match on Wednesday needing only a draw to qualify.

United were quickly in trouble. In the 9th minute, and keeper David De Gea misjudged Xherdan Shaqiri’s cross and prodded the ball with his foot straight to Marco Streller who scored from close range despite mis-hiting his shot to give Basel the 1-nil lead.

United still had plenty of time to put things right, but Wayne Rooney couldn’t pull the trigger on a great chance here.

Things got even worse for the Red Devils when defender Nemanja Vidic was stretchered off with a knee injury after a clash with Marco Streller before halftime. Vidic looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Rooney, who was goalless in 7 games heading in, had his chances but again here, just after the break he is unable to convert shooting wide of the far post.

And it would be Basel veteran Alex Frei who would come through in the 84th minute, scoring at the far post after the United defense misjudged as the Swiss side moved to the brink of eliminating Man U.

Five minutes later, Man U would get one back as Phil Jones puts it home. However, Man U would not find another as Basel holds for the 2-1 win to move on. This is only the third time in 17 Champions League seasons under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, that Manchester United has failed to progress beyond the group stage.
