It’s been 70 years since Japanese bombers swooped down on the US navy fleet in Pearl Harbor. About 120 veterans joined some 3,000 people in a remembrance ceremony for the attack, on Wednesday in Hawaii. Japan’s surprise move triggered the US’s entry into World War II in both the Pacific and the European fronts.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, US President (1933-1945), said, "December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy."

The attack on Pearl Harbor shocked the nation. It killed over 2,400 Americans and sank or damaged 21 ships. The event remains deeply embedded in their memories.

The rememberance ceremony started just before 8 am local time, the same hour as when Japanese planes dropped their bombs 70 years ago.

For veteran survivors, the memories are fresh. Daniel S Fruchter, veteran survivor, age 92, said, "They dropped bombs on our gun parks which were fortunately duds. Otherwise, I would not be talking to you today."

Fortunate for the ones who lived to tell their stories - But many other lives sank with the ships that day. The USS Arizona submerged within 9 minutes, when a bomb ignited its weapons chamber.

Japan had hoped to inflict a similarly fatal wound on the US. But just like the brave veterans standing here today. The US did not crumble on its knees, but stood bravely and went on to win the war with courage.
