US forces have handed over their last but one military base, Echo Base, to the Iraq military. The only one still under US control is the Imam Ali Base in south Iraq’s Al-Nasiriyah Province.

Echo Base is located in Diwaniya city in Al-Nasiriyah Province. The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister’s advisor Hussein al-Asadi, the Commander of the Central Euphrates Ghanimi Osman, and commander of the 8th infantry division Qais al-Muhammadawi.

The 8th infantry division is expected to control the base. In a few days, about 3,000 soldiers in Echo Base are to be transferred out. That will bring the total number of American soldiers in Iraq to under 5,000. The US military has had 505 bases in the country.
