Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has said that closing the Strait of Hormuz is not on the country’s agenda.

Mehmanparast also condemned Israel and the US for threatening a war-like atmosphere and saying they may consider military action, to which Iran would react. He iterated that if the current tension between the west and Iran escalates into conflict, the Strait of Hormuz would be threatened.

The spokesman made the remarks after Parviz Sorouri, an MP and member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Tuesday that Iran plans to hold a military drill to practice its ability to close the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait, on the southern coast of Iran, links the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Nearly 40 percent of the world’s oil and a considerable amount of gas is delivered through the strait. It’s seen as one of the world’s most strategically important trade routes.
