S. Korea steps up military surveillance

Since the Yin Ping Island Shelling in November last year, South Korean - DPRK relations have been worsening. And the death of Kim Jong Il has stirred a strong reaction from the South.

On Monday, South Korean president Lee Mung Bak held an emergency national security conference and telephone with the US and Japan. On the same day, the country set the national army on emergency status, and raised the military defense alert level.

All visits to the DPRK, except for activity at the Kaesong Industrial Park, have been suspended. In addition, The South Korea Unification Ministry said that it has suspended humanitarian and material assistance to the DPRK in light of the current situation.

A resident in Baengnyeong Island, said, "Baengnyeong Island is located at the very north of South Korea. We have made all preparations including defense systems. No matter what happens, we will obey any order given by The South Korean government."
