US Sec. of State meets with Japan FM on Kim's death

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has met with Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Genba to express wishes for peaceful transition in the DPRK.

Clinton said that the US has kept in close contact with all sides of the six-party talks since the death of Th DPRK’s top leader Kim Jong Il. On the day news of Kim’s death came out, US President Barack Obama spoke with South Korean President Lee Myung Bak on the phone.

The US has also talked with China, Russia and Japan. Genba said Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has also called the South Korean President. The Prime Minister immediately cancelled a planned speech and returned to his official residence, where he held a security-council meeting.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary held an emergency press conference in which he expressed condolences over Kim’s death and hoped that this would not affect the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula.
