French public debt slid by 4.7 billion US dollars by the end of this year’s third quarter. The country’s debt ratio to gross domestic product also fell from 86.2 percent in the second quarter to 85.3 percent in the third quarter, thanks to faster GDP growth of 0.3 percent.

However, net French government debt amounted to 2.04 trillion US dollars, about 78.6 percent of GDP compared to 77.8 percent in the previous three months.

France had expected its debt to grow by about 19.6 billion US dollars by 2014, due to its participation in aid packages to help bailout debt-ridden eurozone countries. It estimated a higher debt to GDP ratio at 87.4 percent in 2012 from 85.5 percent forecast for this year.
