Spain’s royal family has disclosed the details of their salaries for the first time since 1979. The move follows a corruption scandal involving the King’s son-in-law.

The official website of the royal family said King Juan Carlos, the king of Spain, was assigned nearly 300, 000 euros a year, of which a little less than half are for his personal use and the rest for official expenses.

The 73-year-old King is widely respected across Spain for overseeing the country’s tense transition to democracy following Francisco Franco’s nearly four-decade-long dictatorship.

But the investigation into the Duke Urdangarin’s business dealings has been tarnishing the image of the Spanish royal family. Despite increasingly negative media coverage related to the Urdangarin probe, many Spaniards welcomed the royal family’s decision to be transparent and publish their earnings.
