Powerful quake strikes off W. Sumatra coast

The US Geological Survey has reported a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra.

Indonesia registered the tremor at 7.1 magnitude. The US Geological Survey reports the epicenter is 420 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh, with a depth of around 30 kilometers. No casualties or major damages were reported.

A tsunami warning was initially issued but was later lifted. A strong quake struck off Aceh in December 2004, creating a devastating tsunami that killed over 200,000 people, and left more than one million homeless.
