British cyclists set two world records

Britain's cyclists have passed their first Olympic test with flying colors. The team, making a statement at the new 2012 London Games Velodrome, earning two golds in world record time and adding a bronze on the opening finals night of the UCI Track World Cup.

The new Velodrome has around 6000 seats, and tickets were tough to find for the opening day competition.

Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish brought the crowd to its feet with a new world best time of 32.754 sec in the team sprint. They beat Kaarle McCulloch and Anna Meares of Australia, who had broken their own world record earlier in the day with a time of 32.828. China’s team of Guo Shuang and Gong Jinjie were eliminated in the prelims and did not reach the final.

The second world record for Great Britain came in the women’s team pursuit final as Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell combined to beat Canada for the title in a record 3 minutes, 18.148 seconds.

Despite failing to reach the final China’s Guo and Gong were happy with how they rode and also pleased with the overall atmosphere of the new facility.

Guo Shuang with Team China said: "I think the result is ok for me. I performed as I had been in training. The audience here is supporting us very well. The atmosphere here is very good, which we have seldom seen before. I enjoyed the passion of the audience here."
