It seems any time former Olympic hurdling champion, Liu Xiang, and current world record holder, Dayron Robles of Cuba meet, there’s drama and it’s happened again at the IAAF Stockholm Indoor Grand Prix in the men’s 60m hurdles.

Robles lost to Liu in Birmingham last weekend in the pair’s first meeting since the Cuban was disqualified for obstructing his rival during the final of the 110 metres hurdles at the 2011 world championships. Friday’s meet was dubbed as the Robles revenge race.

Liu, the 2004 Olympic champion, stood up from the blocks when he was unsettled by the noise of the crowd. With the starters settling back into the blocks and ready to go the Chinese star jumped the gun while his counterpart Robles didn’t flinch. Liu immediately left the track, not waiting for confirmation of the disqualification.

Liu’s absence left Robles the clear favourite and he cruised home ahead of compatriot Orlando Ortega in a time of 7.66 seconds after slowing over the final 10 metres. Liu shook hands with the Cuban to congratulate him and promised to challenge at their next meeting.
