Premier Wen delivers gov't work report

China’s National People’s Congress has opened this year’s session. On behalf of the State Council, Premier Wen Jiabao presented his annual report on the work of the government. In the face of continuing challenges, the Premier vows greater achievements in his final term.

Premier Wen Jiabao opened the NPC session with his report on the government’s work during the past year. He noted that in the face of a complex and volatile political and economic environment abroad, and challenging reform and development tasks at home, great achievements have been made in reform, opening up and socialist modernization.

On behalf of the State Council, Premier Wen Jiabao presented his annual report on
the work of the government.

Wen Jiabao says the government has strengthened and improved macro-control, prevented fast price rises, and achieved steady and robust economic development.

The transformation of the pattern of economic development has been accelerated. Development is now more coordinated, and industries more competitive.

The government has developed social services and promoted balanced economic and social development. It has ensured and improved the people’s wellbeing and solved problems that affect their interests. Reform and opening up has been deepened. And new vitality and impetus has been injected into economic and social development.

But the premier acknowledged the road ahead isn’t easy. 2012 is Wen Jiabao’s last year as Premier and he says he wants to make it count. The government vows to forge ahead with determination, tackle difficult problems directly, and work diligently to achieve results that satisfy the people.

In the next ten days, the 3,000 lawmakers will deliberate and approve several key documents, including the government work report. There are also work reports from the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People’s Court, and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, and some major law amendments.
