The Boao Forum for Asia has opened in China’s southernmost province, Hainan. Over 2,000 politicians, business leaders, and scholars are attending. The forum aims to explore paths for sound and sustainable development. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang noted the Boao Forum represents the increasing influence of Asian economies. With world economies undergoing deep and complicated restructuring, Asia needs to make strenuous efforts to sustain economic recovery.

Li Keqiang pointed out Asia now accounts for over 30 percent of world economy, and contributes more than 30 percent of world economic growth. But the region is still grappling with the challenges of uneven development, instability, and finding energy resources.

Li proposed Asia build growth on internal demand. He said there’s still great potential to explore in consumption, technology innovation, and improving the labor force.

The vice premier also stressed the need to maintain open and inclusive development, and to seek mutually beneficial cooperation with the rest of the world.

BFA Chairman Yasuo Fukuda said the forum’s mission is Asia’s economic integration. This year, with the theme "Asia in the changing world, moving toward sound and sustainable development", the forum will explore the transformation path of Asian’s economies amid global uncertainties.
