The Qiandao Lake, meaning the Thousand Island Lake, is deemed as "one of the most beautiful waters" in the world. There have been multiple attempts to explore the mystery lying beneath.

The Qiandao Lake, is actually a water reservoir.

More than fifty years ago, it was dense woods and vast valleys, cut through by the running Xin’an River.

The reservoir was built to supply power to its six surrounding provinces in eastern China, and to meet the needs of irrigation, and prevent floods.

As it was born, 290,000 residents moved out of their home towns. Thousand-year-old cities, and over 1000 villages were given a watery burial.

The reservoir earned its name, Qiandao Lake, or the Thousand Island Lake -- from the over one thousand islands, each covering over 2000 square meters.

The world under the lake, became a mystery that many wanted to unveil.

In 2001, Chun’an County’s local government took the first plunge. Explorers came across the remains of the walls and gate of Lion city, 43 years after they were buried.

A larger scale exploration followed in 2002. And CCTV’s reporter has dived deep to cover the whole process.

The latest delve was made in 2010 jointly by CCTV and China National Geography Magazine. Using a vast collection of pictures and footages, they also reproduced a 3D scene of Lion City. Unveiling the real face of the underwater ancient city.
