Chinese Minister of National Defense Liang Guanglie is beginning his official visit to the US. The visit aims to strengthen military ties between the two countries.

In a written statement released upon his arrival, Liang noted that China-U.S. relations have seen progress after experiencing many ups and downs over the past 40 years. He also said the two countries share vast common interests within the current complex international situation. The statement echoed the consensus reached at the recent China-US Strategic & Economic Dialogue.

During his visit, Liang will tour a number of major US military bases, including US Southern Command, Fort Benning, and the US Military Academy at West Point. Liang is also set to meet US government and military leaders, and hold a joint press conference with his US counterpart Leon Panetta before wrapping up his visit on May 10th.
