All eyes were on the battle for soccer supremacy in the English Premiership on Sunday. Manchester City and Manchester United both looked for victories in two separate contests that would decide the championship of the English Premier League.

Man U’s match finished two minutes earlier and had claimed its victory, so it was all on the line for City against Queens Park Rangers in the last league game. Pablo Zabaleta scored for City in the 39th minute.

But Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie each scored a goal in each half as QPR took the lead. The crown hinged on the second of five minutes of stoppage time. City substitute Edin Dzeko leveled the match with a spectacular goal.

Then, Sergio Aguero blasted a shot past a diving Paddy Kenny in the QPR goal with just a minute left in the season. It was Aguero’s 23rd league goal and the most important score of the year for Roberto Mancini’s City squad.

Manchester City beat QPR 3-2, and secured its first English title in 44 years in dramatic fashion. Manchester United’s win over Sunderland was every bit as breathless. It was decided by Wayne Rooney’s 20th minute goal. The outcome seemed to have sealed the 20th title for Man U., but City provided the last twist in England’s season-long football saga. United’s players trudged off, facing the club’s first trophy-less season since 2004-05, but City celebrated across town.

Both United and City finished on 89 points, but City’s superior goal difference of eight proved decisive. The English title was settled on goals, rather than points, for only the sixth time, and the first since Arsenal edged out Liverpool on the final day of the 1988-89 season.
