Car owners in Beijing will be using cleaner fuels from Thursday. The new fuel complies with strict standards close to that of Euro V, and it is expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions significantly.

These signs will gradually be replaced in the coming month, as the new fuel standard is a positive response to the deteriorating air quality in big cities. Three month ago, heavy smog shrouded northern China, paralyzing the traffic and caused widespread health concerns. The public was made aware of the level 2.5 particulate matter, it is hoped that the new standard will be the first step towards reducing air pollution.

Professor Zhao Zhen, China University Of Petroleum, said, "Vehicle exhaust emission takes up a large part of the pm 2.5 particles, take Beijing city as an example, the car exhaust contributed to 22% of the local pollution source. And sulfide from the burning of gasoline is the top cause."

The key of obtaining cleaner fuel, is to separate the light and transparent gasoline from the dark, heavy crude oil, compared to processing technique widely adapted by more developed countries, most refinery factories in China uses methods that are less efficient at separating sulfur. The improvements will take time to implement, and more importantly, money. People are worried about where that may come from.

Car owner said "I am willing to do my part in reducing pollution, but I think oil price is already very high, and shouldn’t let us pay the bill."

Professor Zhao Zhen said, "There are already ways to improve the refining procedure based on the current one, but it is still on laboratory level, it will take time to apply it to mass production. And it will more or less affect the cost of oil production."

Oil is the most important source of energy for every day life, and we are finding new ways to better use it. To find a balance between economy and environment, is to give our future a clear blue sky.
