Putin just began a historic third term as president this May. During his 12 years of domination over Russian politics, Putin has paid eight visits to China. Some were for regular meetings between the two countries, and some were for summits.

Cheng Guoping, Chinese vice Foreign Minister, said, "We think Putin's coming visit will be a historical one for two countries' strategically cooperation relationships."

China is the first country outside the Commonwealth of Independent States that Putin will visit since he returned to the presidency. Economic issues have always been the fore of Putin's every visit.

China is already Russia's main source for imports, while Russia is China's eighth largest trading partner. In the first quarter of this year, trade between the two countries grew by 33%, hitting more than 21 billion US dollars.

Ji Zhiye, vice president of China Inst. of Contemporary Intl’ Relations, said, "Thanks to the frequent visits between the leaders of two countries, fast development in economic, trade, security affairs and investment has been achieved."

Energy cooperation has always been a key topic of each of Putin's visits. At the 16th Sino-Russian regular meeting last year, the two countries agreed on crude oil prices and decided to actively push forward cooperation on oil and gas.

Ji Zhiye, vice president of China Inst. of Contemporary Intl' Relations, said, "China’s 12th Five Year Plan emphasizes on environmental protection. As a clean energy, natural gas will be largely needed. Thus we believe this cooperation between the two countries will definitely be increased. "

Cooperation agreements signed by two sides have strengthened the economic ties, and promoted trade and investment.

The frequent exchanges take place not only between high-level officials, but also at the grass-roots levels. The number of students seeks higher degrees in each other's country keeps increasing. The reciprocal years of tourism and culture help to strengthen ties from the bottom up.

For decades, the ties between China and Russia have had an impact on world politics. Putin's 9th official trip to China will surely mark another major chapter in the storied history of this bilateral relationship.
