China has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council for June. China's Ambassador to the UN, Li Baodong will be President of the 15 member body at a difficult time for the council due to the ongoing violence in Syria. Divisions over what to do next in the long running conflict may surface this month.

Briefing the press as he takes the helm at the Security Council, China's Ambassador rejected claims that Beijing is protecting the government in Syria and urged Damascus to comply with peace proposals that it agreed to back in April.

Li Baodong, China's Ambassador to UN, said, "Fully implement Kofi Annan's six point peace plans, immediately without any delay, and stop killing people, launch inclusive political process."

But as China assumes leadership of the UN's most influential body - debate is intensifying over what to do next about Syria. France and other countries are openly discussing the prospect of future military action and there is growing pressure in the US to either increase the size or the powers of the U.N. mission in Syria or let it lapse when it's up for renewal in July.

And Syria isn't the only vexing issue facing the Security Council this month will also deal with the tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, the military coup in Mali, and the potential expansion of sanctions against the DPRK following the rocket launch in April. On this issue China says it wants to create a positive environment to encourage the resumption of a different set of 6-party talks to monitor the DPRK's nuclear research.

There will be another test of council unity on Syria Thursday when joint special envoy Kofi Annan will be here in New York to brief the UN Security Council.
