The United Nations is refusing to be drawn on whether the escalating conflict in Syria can now be seen as a civil war. A spokesman says the UN’s focus should be finding a way to halt the violence, not classifying the fighting.

Martin Nesirky says, "It’s clear that it’s not for us to determine or formally characterise the nature of the conflict in Syria. I think what everyone’s focusing on, is there has been a dangerous intensification of armed violence across Syria in the last several days.

The escalation, the use of different tactics, and the use of different weaponry. And that’s where the focus is at the moment - in trying to stop that. And stop the suffering that the Syrian people continue to endure."
