Italy has sent medical aid to Jordan to help it treat wounded Syrians. Italian ambassador to Jordan, Francesco Fransoni says he’s gravely concerned at the continuing violence and rising number of civilian casualties in Syria.

He says Italy strongly supports special envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan and says it needs to be implemented as soon as possible, to stop the vioence. Fransoni also says Italy’s aid shipment is part of a plan to set up a field hospital near the border with Syria in the near future.

Around 500 Syrian families are believed to have crossed illegally through the fence near Jordan’s northern town of Ramtha. Many asylum seekers are arriving nursing wounds sustained in the shelling in the restive province of Deraa near the Jordanian border.
