The Philippine Air Force has decided to purchase twelve TA-50 light attack aircraft from South Korea in a deal worth about 590 million US dollars.

Philippine officials say the fighter jets are expected to be delivered by 2013. According to reports, the Philippine government is spending more than 1.5 billion dollars, to update its military's equipment.

A significant portion of that is to be directed to bolstering its air force. The TA-50 is an armed trainer jet with attack and operational capabilities matching those of the KF-16 fighter jets operated by the Korean Air Force.

The model is fitted with the engine used in the F-18 fighter jet, and is equipped with digital flight control systems and radar.

Seoul's Air Force currently operates 21 such fighter jets. The first batch of Air Force pilots trained on the aircraft will go into active service at the end of the year.
