Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announced on his official website on Wednesday, he will join Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.

The club confirmed the news on its website minutes later. Drogba declared he signed a two and a half year deal with the club.

The Cote D'Ivoire player said he'll officially start with the squad in July, with plans to play for Shanghai until the end of 2014.

Rumors were hovering around the potential biggest transfer for a Chinese club since Shenhua signed Drogba's former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka back in January.

Drogba just helped the English Premier League side to its first ever UEFA Champions League title 1 month ago. He scored the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the final.

Drogba said on his website he expects a new challenge and is looking forward to experiencing a new culture in China.
