Rescuers have freed a humpback whale after it became trapped in a shark net off Gold Coast in eastern Australia.

Footage from Sea World Gold Coast and Australia’s Nine Network showed the approximately eight-metre female humpback struggling to free herself. Two other humpback whales, which local media said were the female’s companions, circled nearby.

Rescuers said that the nets were entangled around the head of the whale and also around the left pectoral fin, making the task to free her difficult. Sea World said the whale suffered some cuts, but the whale was otherwise fine, and will continue her annual migration to the north of Australia.
