A spokesman for the opposition "Free Syrian Army" has confirmed the capture of a strategic border crossing with Turkey. He highlighted the significance of the victory, in the rebels’ 16 month long fight against government forces.

Vice commander Muhannad Issa, Idlib Martyrs Brigade, said, "The strategic importance of Bab al-Hawa is that it’s Syria’s gateway to Europe, through Turkey. The Free Syrian Army now has control of the crossing. The Syrian army might be shelling us, but we have control of this strategic gate, and from now on it will be of no use to the Syrian government."
