Heavy rain danger to mountain villages

07-30-2012 13:57 BJT

It’s not just the cities that have been hit by torrential rains in recent weeks. Jixian, a county in the north of Tianjin, was also hit hard by the heavy downpours. CCTV Reporter Li Nan visited a village to find out more. (TAKE STORY)

Workers were busy helping reconnect Yangzhuang village to the outside world. The village’s main bridge was severely battered during a heavy downpour on July 21st, cutting off its main access route. A new bridge, made of steel, is now under construction.

There have been several medium rainstorms since last week’s heavy downpour. This has led to rocks loosening and high water saturation on the ground. Any more rain could set-off landslides or other disasters, putting the village in great danger.

A local villager said, "We have been told that if another rain storm comes and it gets too heavy, we need to leave the village immediately. "

Yangzhuang village is located in Jixian county, the north suburb of Tianjin. The county is famous for its mountainous scenery, and has attracted many tourists, especially backpackers. However, because of the recent rain, the local government has had to close down two major tourist areas for safety reasons.

Guo Yong, Dir. of Flood Prevention Office. Jixian Water Conservancy Bureau, said, "We have made a joint announcement with the tourist bureau, that tourists should not enter the mountainous area when it’s raining. And we have also established a hotline, for them to report any danger".
