Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming has paid tribute to Liu Xiang, who fell in the Olympic men’s 110m hurdles heat. As a fellow Shanghai native, he had high praise for Liu Xiang’s efforts at the Games.

Yao Ming, Chinese basketball legend: "We got to know Liu Xiang when he won the gold medal Liu Xiang 2004. However, it was his dedication during the past four years that has let us know what kind of person can be called a professional sportsman. We should cherish iconic figures like him. The Olympics is not all about gold medals. And the spirit of Olympic games is that one strives to fulfil one’s goal despite difficulties. That’s why Liu Xiang, despite his injury, leaped forward on single leg until the very end."
